The FBI warns that message contains viruses that could lead to costly repairs or even identity theft. The software throws a popup on the screen claiming users are infected with trojans, viruses and worms and the malware remover needs to be "registered" (i.e. paid for) for the infections to be removed.

The malicious software cannot be closed out or "X" out and further instructions to download the package could result in worst damage, downloading more malicious software or even keyloggers that log keystrokes on victims computers. The FBI reports that these rogue programs have been estimated to be responsible for about $150 billion dollars in damage.

The FBI asks those who have experienced these popups or infections to contact the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3); www.IC3.gov

Dallas Computer Repair Urges Shoring-up Security

PCVDs' Dallas computer repair is asking all personal PC users to shore-up their computer security by ensuring all anti-viruses are updated along with firewalls running the latest updates as several security articles emerge.

TechNewsWorld reports that utility companies using smart meters to monitor energy distribution across the U.S. electrical grid are continuing to depend on internet smart meters to determine where the energy distribution should take place on the grid. The lack of security in the system has had the ire of lawmakers and security experts. The problem appears, as PDVDs' Dallas Computer Repair is that the energy providers are not adequately securing and monitoring their own systems to prevent hacking and energy disruption.

Another news story that broke about Twitter was that they were hit with a Denial of Service (DoS), by Russians upset over a Georgia blogger, that also affected Facebook's individual users along with Facebook businesses.

Another blog by Dallas Laptop Repair also reports security problems this week that PCVDs' Dallas Computer Repair urges attention be given.

Laptop Repair- Can't Connect to Wireless Connection

Dallas Computer Repair asks, "Have you ever been on a trip outside your area and tried to connect to the internet with your laptop, yet to find out you cannot connect to the internet?" Chances are you may have malware embedded in your operating system that will not allow your portable laptop unit to connect or communicate with an outside source.

It is recommended by PC Virus Doctors' Dallas Computer Repair to have the following installed and updated before traveling to an outside internet connection:
  1. SuperAntiSpyware
  2. Ad-aware
  3. Spybot Search & Destroy
  4. An extra anti-virus such as ClamWin as a redundant backup
It is imperative to have these programs updated, according to Dallas Computer Repair, with the latest anti-malware signatures and advised to run them before one takes off for their destination point. Remember that if one cannot connect to the internet then the latest downloaded ani-malware signatures makes it impossible to rid your laptop/computer of bugs and junk that prohibit the PC from an internet connection.

PCVDs' Dallas Computer Repair strongly recommends that users install an open-source anti-virus, ClamWin, as previously mentioned as it can most often run along with paid anti-virus programs. Our Dallas computer repair also recommends to create a desktop icon when installing the anti-virus which can be a reminder for users that the tool is ready and available for use. Default installation allows for a once-a-day update that one will never know unless checked.

Always, keep your anti-malware updated daily to avoid costly time-outs!

Computer Repair Shops Violate Customer Trust

PC Virus Doctors' Dallas Computer Repair recently gained knowledge of computer repair shops that have invaded customers private files and passwords to financial institutions, social networks and email accounts.

Let it be said and written here: Our customers data will never be compromised for any reason without the customer being fully aware and have instructed PC Virus Doctors to seek private information for the purposes of data retrieval.

An undercover investigation found that when a new laptop was sent to a repair shop for "repair" that the technicians were viewing and even copying private data. Investigators rigged the laptop with hidden spyware and cameras to capture all moves the technicians made. In order to get the faulty laptop running, the technicians simply had to 'snap the chip back into position'; reseat the chip.

One computer repair shop told the customer that a new board must be purchased at what appeared to be retail cost. Several computer repair shops were caught in England and only one repair shop was honest in the whole assessment and did not charge anything for the fix.

PC Virus Doctors' Dallas Computer Repair have been continuing to repair computers and laptops around the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex in an honest and expediant fashion.

Windows 7 Family Pack Announced

Microsoft is listening to the public in regards to households with multiple PCs. In a WindowsTeamblog (linked in this blog title) released Tuesday, there was confirmation that indeed a "family pack" for Windows 7 would be distributed but little other details were confirmed except that the license would include a total licensing of three (3) personal computers. This is a very exciting news release for PCVDs Dallas Computer Repair customer-base that uses multiple computers in their homes.

This may be a winner for families with multiple PCs without having to buy individual licenses and may have the potential to take existing PCs and upgrade the operating system although some hardware upgrades such as RAM may be needed if not absolutely necessary as it seems all progressive upgrades to any software solution requires more disk space and RAM necessary to keep the system running at its potential.

Vulnerabilities Addressed in Firefox and Microsoft

Reports abound on the internet about vulnerabilities in Firefox and Microsoft. U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) reports that there is a vulnerability in Firefox 3.5 that addresses the particular way that Java is processed allowing hackers the ability to execute arbitrary code; this vulnerability is deemed "Highly Critical". CERT also reports that the 'exploit code is publicly available online'. Furthermore, CERT 'encourages users and administrators to disable javascript to help mitigate the vulnerability as described in their "Securing Your Web Browser" article'.

Microsoft is about to address vulnerabilities in their July patch, addressing nine (9) vulnerabilities; three (3) are reported as "Critical" while another three (3) are reported as "Important" on Microsoft's website. The affected Microsoft products include: Windows, Microsoft Office, Internet Security and Acceleration(ISA) Server, Virtual PC and Virtual Server.

Two of the vulnerabilities address ActiveX Control and DirectShow component; Microsoft warned about this "browse-and-get-owned" vulnerability in May and June.

*** Another interesting fact is that after a fresh Vista 64-bit install with all the updates completed about 24 hours ago went well with a Dell XPS M1330, Microsoft informed me that no updates had ocurred and after downloading the updates, the Laptop would not boot in Normal mode nor Safe mode.

Obviously there is a flaw in the 64-bit Vista version and updates in regards to Dell Laptop M1330 series; PC Virus Doctors are not "happy campers".

July 15th update: Miraculously the above laptop problem was resolved. Now PC Virus Doctors are happy campers...we have never experienced such a "hiccup". The laptop booted well and behaved well with testing. Yeah!!!

Microsoft Updates Are Imperative

Many casual computer users take for granted that their systems are not vulnerable to attacks but do not have the understanding that updating their Windows Operating System(OS) is imperative to safe computing, along with maintaining updated malware/virus/trojan protection and firewall safety. The updates include security patches and other protection to keep the Windows operating system as stealthy as possible whether updating a laptop or desktop.

Updating Windows is fairly simple by opening Windows Internet Explorer, all users should have IE 8 installed, then going to "Tools" in the Upper Task Bar and going to "Windows Update". Then it is simple to check the box for "Express" install and simply letting Microsoft explore your updates after installing the "active X" which is a small software installation.

Fresh operating system installs can expect several hours to update Windows, regardless of the latest/fastest hardware, the latest Windows OS and download speeds to download and install the latest updates which are cumulative from the time the operating system on the CD was created.

PCVD's Dallas computer and laptop repair always updates Windows components to ensure the most entrusted computer with Microsoft systems.

BotNet Worm Could Wipe Data on Infected Computers

A report on Cnet indicates that the botnet that attacked the United States and South Korea last weekend harnesses a worm that was scheduled to be activated this Friday, July 11th, to wipe data from infected computers that are estimated to number 50,000 worldwide with the w32.dozer malware infection. Currently, there appears to be no data deletion on infected PCs but experts say that it is too early and that the malware has the potential to be turned on/activated remotely by the malware authors, one botnet expert predicted, unless there is a bug in the program.

Symantec expertise reports that the malware can also be set to destroy the master boot record leaving a computer inoperable and unable to boot to the operating system. The botnets are spreading several different malware, including MyDoom, through emails, according to several experts. A dropper program called W32.Dozer with other malware compenents is sent by W32.Mytob!gen to e-mail addresses on effected PCs and if a user executes the attachment, W32.Dozer drops Trojan.Dozer and W32.Mydoom.A@mm on the operating system.

The installed malware has the ability to update itself and execute as it wishes according to commands that are controlled by the malware authors.

PC Virus Doctors' urge computer users to make sure all anti-viruses, spyware and adware programs are updated and scanned at minimum twice per week as these lethal software programs are lurking in the wild. If anyone needs assistant then please contact PC Virus Doctors for Dallas virus removal.

Online Self-Reporting Personal Info Leads to SSN Compromise

A report from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States (PNAS) on identity theft resulting from personal online information posting has led to revelations on how easy Social Security Numbers(SSNs) may be revealed. Online social networkers need to take heed and protect their intimate data from online scammers and those that prey on innocent online, social networkers from "phishing".

Individuals reporting to websites about birth dates and place of birth can lead exploiters of ID theft the ability to randomly test and verify one's Social Security Number that can further be exploited to reveal more intimate personal identity information. Many social websites ask subscribers to volunteer personal information, phishing, such as, birthplace, birthdate, gender, names, etc. that are used by identity thieves to exploit through careful tabulation and/or analysis of given equations.

PC Virus Doctors' Dallas Computer Repair urges online users to not reveal personal identity information on open/public websites such as Facebook, MySpace and other social networks. If one would like to reveal information then it is advised to be as vague as possible not revealing any specifics that could possibly identify any specific individual.

Uniform Resource Locator (URL) Shortened for Spam Use

Uniform Resource Locator's (URL) are shortened and increasingly used for spam, according to an InformationWeek article. These shortened url's, website addresses, essentially end up as links to spam sites, deceptive in nature, showing up mostly in emails. The links may appear to be authoratative pointing to possible legitimate sites but directs the user to spam/advertising sites with the agenda to sell.

The potential of these deceptive links also have the potential to introduce not only unwanted advertising pages but webpages that have hidden scripts running in the background that can potentially download spyware, adware, trojans, viruses and other malware that can cripple consumers computers and/or leave consumers open to data vulnerabilities.

PC Virus Doctors' Dallas Computer repair urges desktop and laptop users to keep their anti-virus and spyware/adware utilities updated to thwart any potential malware that may arise from these deceptive links often embedded in emails and webpages. These updates can stave off any loss of data leading to data recovery.

Cyber Attacks on U.S. Federal Websites Over 4th of July

Several Federal agency websites within the United States were attacked with a Denial Of Service (DOS) according to a report on Yahoo.com, over the July 4th holiday weekend. The agencies effected included the Treasury Department, Secret Service, Federal Trade Commission and Transportation Department Web sites at varying times, including some that are responsible for fighting cyber crimes.

According to the Yahoo report, Homeland Security refused to comment although they admitted to advising several Federal agencies on how to avoid such attacks. Amy Kudwa, spokeswoman for the Homeland Defense Department, said the U.S. has attacks on its networks daily and that measures have been taken to minimize the effects.

Others familiar with the attack, according to the Yahoo.com story, say the Denial of Service (DOS) was three days withstanding and was an unusual sustaining and sophisticated attack. Also, very interesting to note, is that the South Koreans were attacked in a similar fashion. South Korean government agencies, banks and other internet sites were brought down in a similar fashion to the U.S. agencies.

South Korean websites, Presidential Blue House, The Defense Ministry, The National Assembly Shinhan Bank, Korean Exchange Bank and top internet Portal Naver were having trouble accessing the internet.

According to the Yahoo report, two U.S. government officials demanding anonymity, reported that the U.S. Treasury Department and Secret Service websites were brought down and the internet service providers were working with them to bring the sites back up. Also to note, the Department of Transportation website along with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) website were brought to a halt, that according to one expert was a 'massive outage'.

PC Virus Doctors' Dallas Computer and Laptop Repair is aware of the danger on the internet and tries best and responsibly to protect its customers with the latest security devices and malware removal tools to fend off the hackers and malicious individuals and groups trying destructive tactics to gain information or to harm websites that customers utilize for business purposes.

Seattle Data Center Affects Bing and Shuts Down Websites

InformationWeek reports that a data center in Seattle caught fire that shut down parts of Bing search engine and took down websites for as long as 36 hours.

This sends or should send a strong message to those users who store data in their homes regardless if backup external drives are utilized for data storage. Data should always be stored off-site in case of a disaster that happened in Seattle over the weekend.

PC Virus Doctors have several vendors that store data over the internet, outside of Dallas, in redundant servers to insure data is never lost. The storage is affordable, easy to use and gives users the peace of mind that their data will always be safe and 100% retrievable if a disaster should strike.

Piecing together data from multiple sources such as several PCs, CDs, DVDs, external drives and flash drives can be a daunting and time consuming task even if "data recovery" from bad media is not necessary.

Protect your data today and store it offline!

Virtual Server Security

Some talk on InformationWeek says that data on virtual servers may be at risk due to possible intrusions or user error in backing up malware, resulting in data recovery problems. Also, critics are saying 'doomsday', yet all virtual data storage firms remain calm in their belief that the software, "proprietary code", is impenetrable.

PC Virus Doctors insist that off-site storage is so important to today's data storage needs. avoiding data recovery services. Individuals and businesses need protect their data through external media, removable media and off-site data storage companies. If you need assistant in data transfer then find our services at Dallas Data Recovery.

PC Virus Doctors offer a hard drive evaluation for $45.00 that goes toward final labor if you decide to use the services for hard drive recovery.

Homeland Security Seeks the "Black Hats"

Wow, Homeland Security seems to have teamed up with Jeff Moss founder of the DefCon and Black Hat Security Conferences, as he was appointed to the Department of Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC) on Friday.

According to, InformationWeek, "The HSAC is composed of individuals with extensive security and policy experience from state and local government, the private sector, and academia".

Wow, Homeland Security is going for the best in the country it appears, wow for DefCon and Black Hat for their perseverance

Malicious Website Servers Shutdown

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) shutdown an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that was hosting and distributing malicious programs, spam and even allegations of child pornography, according to InformationWeek.com. The only entity named in the charges is the company named Pricewert LLC had the internet unplugged on them by a San Jose, CA district court judge, at the request of the FTC. A temporary restraining order hearing will be on June 15.

The malicious software distributed included Conficker and an exploit in the DNS. Gary Warner, director of computer forensics at research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham reports it is the worst ISP hosting malicious content in the United States in his opinion, according to the above article on InformationWeek.com, June 4, '09.

The Oregon-based Pricewert LLC, acts as a 'shell company' for individuals located in Eastern Europe who appear to be out of the jurisdiction of the United States, according to InformationWeek.com. Indictedment may be not likely. Pricewert LLC also operated under other names such as 3FN that were identified by Symantec as operating about 600 ip addresses that executed malicious software on unsuspecting visitors to their websites. Even more amazing is that the FTC alleges that 3FN were responsible for 4,500 malicious programs, according to InformationWeek.com.

Although experts don't predict the decline of spam when McColo
and Atrivo/Intercage last year was eliminated as spammers but this shutdown will help reduce the number of infected machines by at least a margin. Vincent Weafer, VP at Symantec Security Response, says these guys that are overseas do not have to be on our shore because they can easily remote to administor, people more trust U.S. servers and realible hosting that is available.

Deception is commonly used to exploit social behavior tricking users into downloading either knowing or unkowingly as experienced by Dallas Computer Repair.

Good Data Backup Habits Include:

PC Virus Doctors' Dallas Data Recovery will also store data for short term or long term periods.

Asta la Vista!

Vista may have seen its better days according to IT consulting firm Gartner in InformationWeek.com adding that Gartner is advising advising technical customers to forgo Windows Vista in preference for Windows 7. If people are forgoing Vista OS then Microsoft will take a significant blow as users pass by the everso criticized operating system yet of Bill Gates.

Dell Considering Android on a NetBook?

Rumor has it (informationweek.com) that Dell may be considering using Android, a Google platform that supports multimedia on its Netbooks, the mini laptop that has the ability to access the internet minus large drives and huge RAM loads to support a standalone Small Office Home Office (SOHO) venture for communications but possibly not capable of running many third party applications such as Microsoft products, many security applications normally available and other third party communication devices, such as Skype, IM and other instant message apps.

The possibility of a smaller digital unit smaller than a laptop is very desirable considering weight, size and the amount of battery that would be needed to charge the mini-laptop.

The negatives of Dell Android Netbooks could be:
  1. battery drain time from normal to heavy use,
  2. amount of drive space available for applications and data storage,
  3. which applications are compatible with the hardware and software?,
  4. how much RAM is available and upgradeable?
  5. how repairable is the netbook?
  6. how upgradeable is this mini-laptop/internetbook?

Conficker Starts Updating Variant C to Conficker E

Conficker C, an internet worm, has been known to start its update on April 1st, 2009 but delayed to everyone's dismay but it started Wednesday night, April 8. The download appears to be updating the C variant into the newly named Conficker E. The newer variant utilizes the Microsoft MS08-67 exploit that was abandoned by Conficker C.

The "E" version instructs itself to be removed/uninstalled on May 3 while directing itself to a new list of websites apparently awaiting further instruction. The worm utilizes P2P, Peer to Peer, to update and it may be several days to see the actual changes and propogation it will use.

There is some good news as the internet worm is decreasing in numbers from around 9 million in January to around 1 million Conficker infected machines worldwide currently in April '09. The U.S. Computer Emergency Response, CERT, has developed software to indentify the Conficker worm, according to Homeland Security, and the extent of damage/infiltration to systems. The tools are available for federal and state governments, organizations, critical infrastructure owners and commercial vendors.

ALL Computer User's Should Have These Tools Handy:

U.S. Electric Grid Hacked?

The Wall Street Journal has reported that the power grids in the United States have been penetrated and that potentially software could have been left behind that lets hackers control the power grid. U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano spoke to reporters after the Wall Street Journal article that the government had known about the vulnerability but declined to comment on whether software has been left behind by the cyberspies. The successful hacking attempts appear to have originated in China and Russia although their embassies here in the states deny any involvement.

The Chinese have been known for years to penetrate U.S. Universities and Government websites so the Journal reports, according to a U.S. security official on the condition of anonymity, it is no surprise that the power grid has been target. Some report the hackers may wait to damage the system when the right time comes, perhaps during conflicts. President Barak Obama has ordered a top to bottom review of the cyber infrastructure in the U.S. because of his concern over vulnerabilities in the system.

The Department of Homeland Security works with industries to develop strategic plans to address external and internal threats to the infrastructure. Tom Donahue, a CIA analyst, spoke to a power-industry conference last year about regions outside the U.S. that had been penetrated and then extortion attempts were levied against them.

Keep your computers as secure as possible:
  1. Keep antivirus applications updated, automatically is the preferred setting.
  2. Install and update spyware and adware applications.
  3. Keep a firewall up and running and keep it updated if applicable.
  4. Do not visit unknown or suspicious websites.
  5. Do not open unknown emails or much more dangerous, visit the links in emails.

Conficker Stalls But Not Over

OK, the Conficker scare has subsided but let's stay aware that anything is possible as this downloading trojan waits for executable instruction(s). The programmers controlling this malware or either intimidated or have other future plans it appears. The authors of the malware are so ingenious that they have yet to be dismantled after years of operations overseas. They continue to financially hurt companies instantly in many fashions to cripling finances, technical operations, etc. bringing an online or physical mortar store to a grinding halt where no longer transactions could be made due to online monetary transaction problems, lack of ability to order items due to online downtime and many other disastrous scenarios.

Conficker's Fool's Day Threat

Conficker worm is awaiting instructions on what to execute on today's April Fool's Day date. So far, at about 4:25 CST, so far the threat appears to be benign but once again the malware is awaiting instruction and that could come anytime after today's date so the 12 million computers it is estimated to have infected are like soldiers awaiting orders to begin battle or go to war.

Intro:
The internet worm was discovered in October, 2008 and has been downloaded via email or tainted websites that have been hacked and malware scripts installed in the background. Some computer users have downloaded Conficker unintentionally while actually trying to find anti-malware removers to legitimately eraticate the worm. Users should be very cautious following links on websites as many are becoming infected searching for information about Conficker and surfing the internet to websites that are intentionally or unintentionally installing the malware to users' computers.

Dallas computer virus removal has seen numerous laptops and desktops infected with Conficker and its many mutations. Often times the drives must be removed from the machines and slaved to a working computer system with the latest virus, trojan, adware, spyware and malware signatures to root out the worm as it mutates many times daily. The worm is very difficult to remove and often times the only way to repair the machines are to reload the operating system after several scans of malware removal that will not remove all malware components.

History and Problems:
The problem partly lies with hacker kids in Russia and two mafia groups, one in Eastern Europe and the other in Russia. These two groups know of each other and compete with each other to attempt to put bogus virus removers on laptops and desktops. Once the malware is installed the two different pieces of malware can conflict with each other as each one tries to dominate the machine.

There are three versions of Conficker, Conficker A which came out around October, Conficker B that came out in January of this year and Conficker C that is waiting for instruction on April 1, 2009. All three versions of Conficker contain a list of 50,000 websites that give commands to the worm at the instructions of the malware authors. Microsoft has issued a $250,000 reward for the capture and conviction of the Conficker authors.

Conficker displays a splash screen upon startup of PC's that often interferes with the normal startup files causing conflict and diffeculty of removal because often the machines will not fully boot to the desktop where further work would allow full removal. Without the ability to fully boot and after slaving the infected drive to another working machine and removing all malware possible then the only way to repair the machine is to fully reinstall the operating system. Interesting, as only Windows is the only target of the worm with Linux and Mac systems immune from Conficker attacks.

How to Tell if Infected:
  1. Users that cannot update their antivirus or other malware tools can assume that Conficker is installed deeply in the system and not allowing any updates or downloads from legitimate antivirus and malware vendors.
  2. Users cannot boot into safe mode.

Recommendations:
The Computer Emergency Response Team suggests that computer users:
  1. Install all security patches updates for your PC. The instructions for Microsoft's updates are here.
  2. Install and update all anti-virus, spyware and adware programs that users have onhand.
  3. Make sure the firewall is turned on.
  4. If infected you may call Dallas Virus Removal for help.
  5. Read the CERT advisory on Windows AutoRun feature.

GhostNet Unveiled

Researchers at Toronto University uncovered a hacking networked named, GhostNet recently, according to the NY Times. The computer systems invaded included the office of the Dalai Lama's, the exiled Tibetan leader, whose investigators discovered the malware and bizarre code that led tracks to servers in China within the provinces of Hainan, Guangdong and Sichuan , along with a server in Southern California. The researchers hired by the Dalai Lama are with the Munk Center for International Studies at the University of Toronto and claim that no less than 1,295 computers are infected and compromised in at least 103 countries.

The Center reports that many embassies, foreign ministries, NGO's and other government agencies have had files compromised and stolen by GhostNet. The researchers report that many of the activity was focused on South Asian and Southeast Asian countries. The report states that no evidence was found that the United States Government was penetrated, however, NATO was monitored for half a day and that the computers Indian Embassy in Washington were accessed.

Astonishly, the researchers from the Munk Center for International Studies report that the malware has the capability to turn on cameras and microphones on computers making it an intensley sophisticated spy machine. It appears the Chinese Government is knowledgeable of the Dalai Lama's emails and computer as people have been targeted by the Chinese and warned to stay away from the Dalai Lama and to stop political actions while one person was shown transcripts from online communications.

Another element discovered was that a Chinese online entity similar to Skype had connections to the spy network and was owned by the Chinese Government. Some are skeptical to implicate the Chinese while others believe China has direct responsibilities such as two researchers at Cambridge University.

The reports are going to be published in the Information Warfare Monitor that is associated with the Munk Center for International Studies at Toronto University.
