How to Run a CheckDisk on Hard Drives- More Maintenance Tips

How to Run a Disk Check

The subject of check disk or chkdsk command is a much needed topic that is crucial for drive maintenance and is one thing many of the users I see are totally clueless about because not enough info is out their explaining why and how it needs to be done.

WARNING: running a disk check could take hours to perform. Best done in the evening while sleeping.

The reason drives need to be disk checked is because there are millions of sectors on hard drive platters and sometimes these sectors get bad and can either be repaired or the system tell itself not to write data to those sectors because they are "bad". The system files may also the repaired or "fix"ed.

The checkdisk for Windows XP may be performed through going to , then clicking on , then right clicking on the drive you are performing maintenance on. Now, go to the bottom of the popup screen and left click on , then go to , then go to the button labeled , then check the two boxes. You should now get a screen saying it will perform the check on reboot.

Now reboot but beware as this could take several hours to perform. You don't want to stop this process after you have started it.

To run the disk check through the "run" - command feature then hit , then click , then type in the next line and hit "Enter"

chkdsk volume: /f /r

The above volume is your drive letter.

PC Virus Doctors' Dallas PC Repair recommend runnning a disk check once a month.

Hard Drive- PC Maintenance Tips for 2011

Hard Drive Maintenance

Happy New Year to All.

Maintenance on hard drives is good to do at least once a month. Now is a good time to take the hard drive to some cleaning, disk checking and defragmenting along with a full scan at the end of the evening since a full virus scan can take hours. PC Virus Doctors would also recommend an additional scan with a good antispyware.

MAKE SURE ALL YOUR DATA IS BACKED UP!!!!!

Please read the above again. If you have an old drive and have not performed any of the maintenance or only the malware scans then one can just expect data loss...again...don't be surprised if your data even "disappears".

That being said here is a bulleted list of maintenance and scans for the hard drive. PC Virus Doctors recommends running this maintenance in the order given:
  1. Dump all the temp files from Windows, Internet Explorer and other browsers
  2. Run a quick virus scan and antispyware scan. (Previous recent posts have what is needed)
  3. Run a check disk (google for the term if you don't know how, more on this with next blog)
  4. Defragment
  5. Run a deep- full scan with an up-to-date antivirus
  6. Run a full or deep scan with an up-to-date antispyware
If you have any trouble you can call PC Virus Doctors' Dallas Computer Support at (214) 723-4335

Stuxnet- THE Worm of 2010

The Stuxnet Worm, the stealthiest trojan to date, the living, real-life novel, waiting to be written about computer security breaches. PC Virus Doctors have been pondering the damage and intellect Stuxnet has in its arsenal. The scenarios pointed out by several security experts paints a grim outcome at best.

The worm has dissipated in the news but PC Virus Doctors suspicion that even the slightest knowledge is known about this worm that could expose every hardware, software and data information that could be harvested from infected computers and systems.

Stuxnet is infecting Microsoft products, allegedly, in Iran's nuclear facility and infecting software of other vendors in the nuclear capacity supplying Iran with physical and software equipment to power their nuclear facilities.

PLEASE- Make Sure ALL Your Securty Products Are Up-to-Date!

Backup Your Social Media- Data Recovery is NO Solution

An interesting article on CNN.com website explains how to backup solution media in which data recovery will not be an option with your information located on proprietary machines owned by corporations.

The information can be stored by users and hopefully uploaded back to the server in times of a disaster or it could be then uploaded to another domain name and set as a blog in addition to other related content.

Social Media users can backup their:
  • Blogs
  • Tweets
  • Facebook
  • Photos
Backup your social media so you don't waste hours of information and pictures disappearing off the "cloud".

Add an Extra Free Firewall to Windows- Comodo

Comodo Firewall can be used with Windows Firewall with XP and other operating systems adding additional security. The firewall also will check for and update itself with user prompts.

The firewall can be set for different security levels and can be integrated with an antivirus. If unknown executables start Comodo will warn users and tell which application is starting and whether it is a known "safe application" or "unknown application". Users may select to allow or block the executable.

Comodo Firewall runs in the task bar where internet traffic can be blocked with the icon in the taks bar and to select "Block All" in case of suspected malware that may be downloading through hacked or rogue sites.

Dallas Computer Service recommends Comodo Firewall in addition to Windows Firewall for additional security.

Android Phone Trojan- Geinimi

A new trojan, Geinimi,  has emerged from China it appears and infects smartphones through pirated applications. The programs are legitimate but hacked versions that are embedded with the Geinimi Trojan. Lookout Mobile Security reports that the trojans can create a botnet and that the control server is in China, according to the article in TechNewsWorld.com.

The trojan then collects information including user coordinates and Geinimi hides itself and also encrypts its commands and controls. The security says 'do not turn off sideloading protection' which is needed to download and install these pirated apps.

Free Anti-Malware- Anti-Spyware for Businesses

Spyware Terminator is available to businesses and private users through open-source. PC Virus Doctors uses the utility for a quick daily scan to get rid of stubborn tracking cookies that will not be removed through conventional means, through the operating systems and browser deletions.

Spyware Terminator may be configured with ClamWin so users can have extra scanning signatures.

Benefits of Spyware Terminator:
  • Quick scans actually do perform quickly and thoroughly
  • Configurations may be set for "Live-Time Protection"
  • ClamWin may be integrated into "Live-Time Protection"
  • Licensed for Business use through open-source
  • Easily configured even for beginners
  • Users can quickly change configurations within a short learning curve
Negative Aspects:
Minor annoyance but it does serve up ads when looking at the configuration but does not serve up ads any other time; this said, ST seems to take up little resources, a positive.
It never hurts to have an extra spyware, malware remover in the toolbox especially if it is compatible with other malware scanners which in PC Virus Doctors experience has been positive with no set backs at all.

Spyware Terminator is a great free tool for businesses to double check with other organizations, albeit open-source or paid vendors of virus scanners/signatures.

Free AntiVirus for Businesses

Businesses may at times not be able to afford antivirus solutions for all work stations but there is an excellent alternative to "no antivirus solutions". ClamWin is an open-source antivirus scanner that can automatically update at times the users may set and ClamWin will automatically scan daily or weekly in the user settings.

The antivirus can be configured to run during the night or weekends when the stations are not in use. PC Virus Doctors' Dallas Computer Support uses the software as a second antivirus and is compatable with the primary antivirus. ClamWin can also be configured by default to scan incoming and outgoing Microsoft Outlook emails. Also email alerts may be sent to users when malware is detected.

Now there is no excuse for business owners to be absent of an antivirus on all machines in the office with up-to-date virus signatures and frequently scanned computers and laptops.

Keep Your Media Players Updated

PC Virus Doctors recommend keeping their media players updated to avoid exploits, fake antimalware, etc. The media players are updated often and will patch their exploits as they become known.

Playing media from unknown sources such as limewire and other peer to peer (p2p) programs may have malware embedded.

Updated media players will help ameliorate media with embedded malware.

New Rogue AntiVirus List Update

PC Virus Doctors have released a new rogue antivirus list to help distinguish the good software from the bad, rogue ware that is plaguing the net right now. Beware of the look-alike Microsoft knock-offs; they can be very deceiving.

The new fake antiviruses out there "in the wild" right now are difficult to remove.

Good luck to all...

Virtumonde Back in Stealthy- Difficult-to-Remove Status

Virtumonde is back in its ugly form as hard to identify and if identified the antimalware cannot remove it. The Vundo trojan with its name-like Virtumondo can be hard to stop without the latest "fix" which may not be available for 24 hours or more. Spybot nor SuperAntiSpyware and many other scanners have been able to help as this trojan runs in memory upon startup it is tough. Spybot could Identify malware but not remove it with the accompanying messages stating, 'you do not have administrative rights...can we run on reboot'; clicking 'yes' and Spybot would not autorun on reboot.

Finally, with a more recent update of Malwarebytes and signatures from Nov. 30, 2010 I was able to break the back of the trojan and finally able to now access "safe mode". I just decided to try 'safe mode' and was able to access and now decided to run Spybot in 'safe mode' and Spybot was not able to identify more malware and was ablet to "Fix the Problem".

Hopefully more security vendors will get the fix so the recent Vundo trojan can be more easily disabled.

Keep Your Java Updated

It is imperative to keep Java updated so the hackers and malware writers can not take advantage and exploit Java. Many malware can take advantage of older versions of Java. Users should let the Java Scheduler run at start up just to keep the latest versions updated which is security imperative.

PC Virus Doctors just found about dozen Java exploit programs on the last scanned laptop. The resutl was the destruction of boot files whether through Java exploits or the other ton of malware that was removed most likely due to P2P programs.

P2P programs seem to attract the malware distributors.

Replace Old Hard Drives or Loose Data

Many PC users do not understand that hard drives fail. The hard drive is the only physically working part on the machine minus the data/electrons that are moved through the motherboard and other peripherals. These drives spin at average around 5200 revolutions per minute.

Drives are basically holding data like a record player in ways that:
  1. The record needle on a record player is now like a head reader/writer on a hard drive
  2. The record on a record player is now the platter in a hard drive

Years and years of a physical platter spinning at several thousands revolutions per second is bound to wear out. Is there any disagreement here?

PC Virus Doctors have so many people asking why we need to move or save data on drives that are over two years old after they have become infected with viruses or trojans. This is science readers. Parts wear out. Platters that hold data may start to become worn. The head writer becomes worn and may be hitting the platter.

Here becomes the real danger involving virus/trojan removals on older drives:
  • Many times the hard drive must be pulled from the original machine because no programs will execute from the original PC
  • Now the drive is pulled it must be slaved (in a variety of ways) to a healthy computer with the software and hardware designed to examine the drive and remove the malware.
  • OK, once that is done and the drive is cleaned and repaired and placed properly back into the original machine....
  • The data is now not available....GONE.
The absentee data is one I cannot explain except for the fact that the malware must have changed the physical settings on the hard drive.

So beware if you want to be cheap and inattentive to your data. It may be the last time you see pictures of your baby. Call Dallas Data Recovery for help in recovering information from old hard drives.

Redundant Firewalls

PC Virus Doctors' Dallas Computer Support cannot stress enough about extra firewall protection whether it is a software or hardware firewall solution.

A few good free firewalls:
  1. ZoneAlarm Free Firewall
  2. Comodo Firewall
Comodo Firewall can be used in conjuction with Windows Firewall. If you are using wireless on your PC or hardwired these can be critical in data protection and fighting off malware.
I busted my neighbor trying to access my wireless PCs using Comodo. It is easy to use and you can configure in an easy mode or more stealthy mode.

Timely Rogue Ware- Trojan Meredrop Revisited

PC Virus Doctors have never seen such a stubborn trojan to remove. The wait time for the removal tool was hours. The thought of removal was seemingly hopeless but with much patience virture did arrive. It is always amazing, but should not be with our experience, with the toughnest of the rogue programs that arrive this time every year. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.
Users should always make sure they have the latest Windows updates.
  • all Windows platforms/ operating systems should be using IE 8; Internet Explorer 8- NO Exceptions
  • after upgrading to IE 8 then go to the "Safety" tab and at the bottom of the column go to "Windows Update" and down load all "Important Updates"; VERY IMPORTANT!
  • More on Windows updates later.

The rogue ware'z toughest stuff always arrives like Christmas and before Christmas.

Government Internal Response to WikiLeaks

PC Virus Doctors' have learned that the Government responses to the Wikileaks incident that is embarrassing many world governments is taking the information servers offline to some of those in the past that had access privileges. We should do the same as citizens and disconnect our information from the internet less it be compromised.
Some simple solutions:
  • take USB drives out of computers while online;
  • disconnect hard drives while online;
  • and encrypting confidential data.
Always remember to keep your independent antivirus and antimalware scanners updated. The more legitimate antivirus, antimalware scanners the better but they are worthless without recent signature updates; get 'em they are free. Right? Hint.
Never doubt that there is someome out there or close by that wants your data!

Tech Terms Listed On PC Virus Doctors

PC Virus Doctors' Dallas Computer Support is launching and expanding a large tech terms list to help those understand what these ever new technical terms mean in the simplest of descriptions. The definitions will be brief and should hopefully be understood by those who are not to technological but would like a grasp, minimally on concepts of gadgets and the latest hardware and software for PCs.

The list will also be used by staff, sometimes the speeds of devices, capacity of devices, etc., can be overwhelming to retrieve from memory which proves what websites and web pages are for but to serve up useful information.

If anyone would like to see certain topics or terms explained, please do not hesitate to contact us or correct us if our term explanations are too simplified or outright wrong ;)

Bing Allows Reporting Rogue Websites

Tons of rogue antiviruses are unleashed daily it seems that Bing now has a form to report rogue websites that distribute malware. The programs that these web sites unleash is nothing but bribery to get users to buy this worthless malware from about $50-$100. Removing these pest programs is very difficult and often requires expertise to regain hold of the computer. PC Virus Doctors' Dallas Computer Support often works removing these bribery programs that have left users helpless whether in a home or work environment.

I just tried to click on a .pdf file of some names of rogue antiviruses and the Google entry just disappeared within a flash from the results page. Google is also taking aim at delisting rogue websites distributing bunk malware.

PC Virus Doctors have always noticed these fake antimalware programs start occurring around Thanksgiving and leading into Christmas. It seems the cyber criminals like to have their greedy Christmas and holiday season as they make millions yearly.

Here You Have/Just For You Email Worm

PC Virus Doctors' Dallas PC Support are not surprised by a large number of emails pushed to organizations in order to install an email worm that immediately started sending emails in large fast numbers. The email worm also attempted to disable any security software allowing it to start an email server on its own from user's computers.

The subject line of the email read either "Here You Have" or "Just For You". This is a classic email worm attack. Security software such as anti-virus and anti-spyware programs have found the identification and worm removal method for this particular worm. Users should update all security software and do a check just to make sure their PC machines are not infected.

One Main Rule for Emails:
  1. Never open emails that you do not know who personally sent them.
Rule Two for Emails:
  1. Make sure your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs are updated with the latest signatures.

Dallas PC Repair Recommends Caution Removing Trojans

PC Virus Doctors' Dallas PC Repair recommends extreme caution when removing rogue/fake anti-virus programs due to corruption of startup files.

If extreme care is not taken to remove the "worst of the worst" infection then boot up files may be corrupted that will interfere with the entire process of malware removal successfully.

PC Virus Doctors recommend running "everything under the sun" to make sure any and all malware is removed before boot up.

Often times boot up is impossible in 'safe mode' or normal boot mode. This is extremely frustrating and even removing the drive, slaving it then scanning it can be frutile.

The best situation is to give the machine to PC Virus Doctors' Dallas PC Repair, regardless of its a desktop or laptop, and have the patience to get rid of the malware which at this point will be generally a minimum of 72 hours to get the fix.

Dallas Computer Repair Going Social Marketing

Dallas PC Repair, trying to stay with the times and more difficult trying to stay with the latest tech news involved specifically with malware issues, security issues and general tech news, we have created some icons on the site like addthis, blog icons to this site plus tweeter links in the news section.

This is unexplored territory. We have deleted major ipod repair page links in favor of one link in the right hand column for ipod repairs. No we have not abandoned them; ipod repairs.

We hope that people will follow us on the social netword side of things. PC Virus Doctors are trying to capture some on the computer social networking side; PC Virus Doctors hopes to offer value added, safety added sides to web/internet surfing with our blog/knowledge.

Dallas Computer Repair Recommends Online Scans

Dallas Computer Repair recommends occasional online scans to ensure that the installed anti-malware programs are still functioning properly by not reporting false problems when they exist; i.e. the installed programs have not become contaminated and are not reporting problems falsely or positively; run several to get same results.

Here are great online virus scans:
These are good tools to bookmark, pick one and run like every other week when you go to sleep. Just gives some peace of mind.

If you know you are infected then these are imperative to get down and find the culprit/malware that is hiding on your system.

Dell Laptop Screen Replacements- How to Identify the Specific Screen

Laptop models often time come with different hardware installed regardless if it is designated as a particular model. The screen may be different, the modem may be different, the wireless card may be different and so on.

The way to identify the particular hardware is to visit Dell's website and enter the service tag number and then find the hardware configuration to identify that model's particular screen and hardware installed on that specific laptop.

Then identify your screen and you can order it from the internet taking about three days for normal mailing.

As PC Virus Doctors have warned, searching particular celeb's or topics can be not-so-good, according to McAfee's reports on celebrity websites hosting malware. Let PC Virus Doctors make a clear and concise statement as to the owners of these malware hosting sites; they most likely are owned by malware authors or could be legitimate websites that have been injected with malware scripts. I do no believe for one second any celebrity is involved in this menagerie.

  2. Julia Robers
  3. Jessica Biel
  4. Gisele Bundchen
  5. Brad Pitt
  6. Adrian Lima
  7. Jeniffer Love Hewitt and Nicole Kidman
  8. Tom Cruise
  9. Heidi Klum and Penelope Cruz
  10. Anna Paquin
Do not fall pray to websites injected with malware. Always keep your anti-spyware, anti-malware and anti-virus up-to-date before trying these searches and that being said you are own your own.

Call PC Virus Doctors when you are tired of searching these Celeb's and falling victim to malware.

Security Tool- Rogue Anti-Malware Remover- Removing this False Software

Security Tool is a rogue anti-virus remover, a.k.a. scareware, that reports false findings of viruses, trojans, spyware, adware and any other malware under the sun. This is a difficult to remove rogue anti-virus.

Here is a screenshot:

The fake program reports many viruses, trojans, spyware and other malware found but these are false reports. Upon booting the computer PC users will find that it is "scanning" (false) then it starts falsely reporting infections. At this time or shortly after it will ask to register the fake anti-virus program. The program will then ask for a credit card to "activate" the fake program which actually just makes it stop giving multiple popups but still resides in an impossible to get rid of mode of operanda.

Often times users are unable to execute/run their own security programs resulting in multiple problems. Basically, the desktop or laptop is rendered useless. Even USB drives loaded with security programs will not start and may even be deleted from the thumb drive because of the viciousness of the malware program residing on the machine.

This is one of the most frustrating situation for users, understood.
  1. Attempt to backup any data; do not be concerned with backing up the malware as PC Virus Doctors will give you the tools to clean up the backup drive which are included free with paid malware removal.
  2. Stay offline as these malware programs have injected trojans built within including viruses that spread computer to computer.
  3. Do not email other users since this is spread through emails.
  4. This fake anti-virus is spread through legitimate websites, fake adverstisements and fake websites and emails.
Trust an experienced malware expert in removing infections.

ScareWare- Rogue Anti-Virus Utmost Protection and Removal Techniques

Preface
PC Virus Doctors' Dallas Computer Support has been involved with malware removal for a decade now. That is how this company was originally formed but now takes on comprehensive software and hardware solutions for desktops and laptops. Like we explain to our customers, the best offense is a good defense.
Let's all be honest here, nothing like honesty when dealing with criminals. That's right, these guys that see to it malware is installed on your system are there to take your money, either through bribery in order to leave your machine alone (which will be a short-lived relief), or install adware that serves up advertisements on your machine where they get paid for each ad served to you.

How Machines Become Infected

PC Virus Doctors are often asked, 'how did I become infected'? The answer is always unknown as to each individuals infection, unless porn links are prominent upon drive cleaning which is really not that often. These malware programs come in from many ways in which the cyber criminals continue to get more crafty and crafty to keep their lucrative business thriving.
  1. Emails- the oldest infection carrier ever and it still works.
  2. Injecting Legitimate Websites with Invisible Code- PCVirusDoctors.com website has had many visitors from unscrupulous, suspicious locations trying to visit for "computer or ipod repairs". Highly suspicious and rightly so. See what PC Virus Doctors wrote about 'search results resulting in infections'. PC Virus Doctors often research for particular infections and cures and we can be bit in the backside just like the common household PC user by stumbling upon websites that are tainted with malware.
  3. Legitimate websites are also tricked/duped themselves upon serving up Malvertisement which is revolving advertisements injected with malicious script and maybe with not all revolving advertisements, just that one Malvertisement.
Do not feel as though this is out of control. I can control it as an individual and so can my company, stated here, P.C.V.D.s, through a proper defense and offense.

Defense First

One cannot take any action unless proper security software is installed and I do not mean one piece of software. There must be a multiple lines of defense in order to take on the best cyber criminals in the industry trying to take your cash or take down your PC and these tools MUST be updated constantly.

Never, ever believe that paid software is going to make you safer, it can but it depends on how it is used and the quality of this "Paid/Professional" software. I personally work on a shoe string budget because I have to but I can stave off these cyber criminals through due diligence.

Warning

DO NOT research "free anti-virus, anti-malware or anti-spyware programs" to attempt to use them as defense. These searches will get uneducated users into quick problems. This was one of my personal learning experiences ten years ago. This was a learning lesson that taught me a lot, however, if you need your computer tomorrow, I would refrain from my failed attempts and the lessons I learned. Some lessons were good but many others were costly as far as downtime.

Watch your other search terms, especially popular search times at the moment, "trending searches". Be extra cautious.

Downtime is lost time which generally means lost cash or at least lost pleasure from the internet and even the computer may shut-down and not reboot.

Now On the Offense
  1. Case Scenerio: Ok, let's now assume we stumbled upon an affected website, injected with malware because we get the "WARNING: Your Computer is infected with 666 trojans, 666 adware, 666 spyware and uncountable registry issues!!!" ***Please note that there are often misspellings and the English language syntax is improper.
  2. Action Step [1]: You should immediatley try to hit the back button to back the page to the previous page. If that is not possible then immediately try to "X" the page and close it in the upper right of the webpage, the red "X".
  3. Action Step [2]: If you cannot accomplish Step 1, then hit the power button and immediately power down, sacrificing anything that has not been saved.
Now if you hit the back button successfully you should be OK.

If you had to power down which is often time the best and only choice, users should run their anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, all of them, upon reboot, the entire tool box (hint: users need a complete toolbox). Here are two hints: Always have Spybot S&D downloaded and updated and a current favorite free anti-virus updated always, Avira.

These are some powerful tools and hints to the utmost toolbox in cyber defense as practiced and proved today.
Disclaimer: Search engines, legitimate websites and legitimate advertisers are NOT involved in these schemes with cyber criminals which always results in the criminals being overseas and undetected. These legitimate entities are always trying to be on guard against such fraud but is just a daunting task that will result in the technique of cyber criminals being stopped, every time. Stealthy Trojan Zeus3 Empties Bank Accounts Worldwide

Reports are slow to come out, however, news on the new Zeus ver. 3 is that it has emptied bank accounts worldwide. Security experts at M86 Security reports the Zeus3 exploit/trojan is 'highly sophisticated and very dangerous'. The trojan acts as a data collector and also performs illegal online transactions.
The attack was pulled off by [1] infecting legitimate websites (a common means now), [2] creating false advertising sites where infectious code is installed and [3] publishing infected advertisement on legitimate sites. It appears, according to M86 Security, that the Control and Command Center for the cybercriminals was located in Eastern Europe.
The exploits are conducted through browsers that lead to the computer becoming infected.
The infection appears to mostly effecting Great Britain banks where 3,000 accounts have evaporated monetarily from an unnamed bank to the tune of $1 millions. M86 Security reports that so far no security products offered to the public are able to identify or remove the stealthy malware.
Users should make sure the following applications are the latest versions available as the infections only affects Windows Systems:
  1. Adobe
  2. Java
  3. Firefox
  4. Internet Explorer
  5. Windows Updates
Always keep your [1] anti-virus and [2] anti-spyware applications updated with the latest signatures! Regardless if this Zeus3 is now unable to be found on infected systems it will shortly as security teams with malware removal products will be working nonstop to get the infection identified, contained and the ability to remove the infections from customer machines.
Do not get hired by a company to transfer money (money mules); this is the preferred way at this point to get the money out of the country! These schemes are international bank fraud with many unsuspecting people involved. Stay educated!
If infected then get a Computer Virus Removal.

Care Should Be Taken On Search Results and Malicious Software

Care should be taken in regards to malicious software and search results. Tests, performed by Barracuda, confirm that search engines are serving up websites that have malicious software installed behind the scenes on web pages that are served up on results to be reviewed by searchers. These infected web pages will ultimately result in computer repair or support as the technical difficulty in removing these PC infections can be overwhelming for an amateur.
The most popular searches turning up malware were:
  1. Spy ware related searches
  2. Entertainment subjects/news
  3. P2P and proxy related searches
Cyber criminals are automatically syndicating the web's buzz to accelerate their attempts to successfully install malware/trojans/viruses. These techniques are called blackhat SEO where cyber criminals try to mix legitimate techniques with criminal behavior and often are successful resulting in damaged operating systems that often times cripple computers.
All PC users should ensure their antivirus and antispyware products are up-to-date at all times to avoid computer repairs.
