Sony PlayStation Networked Attack Linked to Amazon EC2

Iran has identified a second virus that they have named 'Stars', Yahoo reports. The head of the Iranian military unit in charge of combatting sabotage, Gholam Reza Jalali, says that their experts have not finalized the analysis of the "espionage virus" they call "Stars". Jalali did not report what facilities or equipment the malware targeted or when it was first detected.

Jalali, head of the "Passive Defense" unit dealing mainly with counter sabotage, downplayed the payload, a virus term meaning the destructive properties of the malware. Jalali did report that initially the virus would deliver minimal damage and the file may be mistaken for executable government organization files.

Jalali also reports that a second unit has been setup by Iran's Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications to disseminate the malware and fully examine the delivery and payload of the destructive virus.

Last year, Stuxnet, a powerfully destructive worm, hit the nuclear facilities in Iran that had the potential to completely shut down the centrifuges that make the uranium. Iran has said it has identified the malware/virus/worm authors as coming from two countries, the United States and Israel. Jalali reports that Stuxnet had the ability to cause a large-scale industrial accident and the potential for loss of life.

Stuxnet's payload was to play back pre-recorded data that was then monitored by machine and human while the centrifuges starting spinning faster and faster that would overload the physical machines and cause overheating and eventual failure.

If the power supply fails and there is no lights on the front chassis of the computer OR the motherboard then it is time for the ultimate test. The following steps call for a known-working power supply with the minimum amount of wattage, preferably 350 watts to be safe, just for testing purposes but not full-out performance.

NOTE: the old style power connectors to peripherals around the motherboard connected by cable have the 4-pin connection. The newer style power connections are "L" shaped.

***NOW DISCONNECT THE POWER CORD FROM THE POWER SUPPLY (P/S):

The next step is to take a preliminary assessment where the power cords connect from the power supply and connect to the peripherals surrounding the motherboard, such as:

DVD or CD drives

hard drive(s)

ATX main power cord

4-pin port

*Users can accomplish each step by aligning the new power supply on the computer laid on its side and removing each connection one at a time and replacing each connection with the new power supply one at a time.

The physical access to the internal personal computer may be accomplished by:

Identifying the entry into the inside whether by screws or a "latch" located on the top, back (the power supply side) or possibly the top and bottom latches compressed simultaneously. Remove these screws on ONE side of the computer to access the interior or depress the latch(es) to remove the panel to the chassis; MOST OFTEN THE LEFT PANEL IF THE PC IS FACING FORWARD.

Disconnect the top power connector on the interior front panel of the desktop, regardless if its a 4-pin or SATA power connector, and label if needed (the top most powered peripheral should be the DVD or CD drive). You will most likely have one or two DVD or CD player/recorders.

Working from the top of the computer down, after the top drives, listed in the above step #2, then we disconnect the power from the hard drives that hold the data; once again the same type "L" connector, just pull gently but firmly.

Next is the ATX or similar power connector to the motherboard that is a cable with around 16 wires going into a long, rectangular connector. [A] DEPRESS the clip that secures the wire harness to the motherboard. **Note how this connector is connected. [B] there may be a second 4-pin connector that completes the power connection to the motherboard that is located directly next to the larger power harness noted in [A].

There is another 4-pin connector located around the CPU that needs to be disconnected also.

The power may now be plugged into the power supply and tested.

***BE SURE EVERYTHING IS PLUGGED IN SECURELY AND GROUNDED.***

Stuxnet, the computer worm damaging Iran's Nuclear Facility, is being dissected and is still amazing in its stealth and ingenous abilities according to the New York Times. The worm is reported to be a possible U.S. joint Israeli effort to derail or slow the Iranian nuclear ambition to create a nuclear bomb that Iran maintains is false. The Time reports that the digital trail appears to trace across several continents with which appears to have several authors contributing to Stuxnet.

Siemens, a German industrial manufacturer, allegedly manufactured the machines the Iranian's are using to develop nuclear energy. Idaho Naltional Laboratories, a United States Energy Department firm, appears to have examined the computer controllers of the Siemens' machines where it is speculated that they identified some hard to find holes that may have been exploited for use with the Stuxnet worm.

The Iranian's, according the the Times areticle, are trying to create nuclear facilities similar to Israel's who has continued to deny it has nuclear weapons.

Apparently 1/5 of Iran's Nuke facility has been damaged or destroyed by the stuxnet worm. How to Run a Disk Check

The subject of check disk or chkdsk command is a much needed topic that is crucial for drive maintenance and is one thing many of the users I see are totally clueless about because not enough info is out their explaining why and how it needs to be done.

WARNING: running a disk check could take hours to perform. Best done in the evening while sleeping.

The reason drives need to be disk checked is because there are millions of sectors on hard drive platters and sometimes these sectors get bad and can either be repaired or the system tell itself not to write data to those sectors because they are "bad". The system files may also the repaired or "fix"ed.

The checkdisk for Windows XP may be performed through going to , then clicking on , then right clicking on the drive you are performing maintenance on. Now, go to the bottom of the popup screen and left click on , then go to , then go to the button labeled , then check the two boxes. You should now get a screen saying it will perform the check on reboot.

Now reboot but beware as this could take several hours to perform. You don't want to stop this process after you have started it.

To run the disk check through the "run" - command feature then hit , then click , then type in the next line and hit "Enter"

chkdsk volume: /f /r

The above volume is your drive letter.

Maintenance on hard drives is good to do at least once a month. Now is a good time to take the hard drive to some cleaning, disk checking and defragmenting along with a full scan at the end of the evening since a full virus scan can take hours. Virtumonde Back in Stealthy- Difficult-to-Remove Status

Virtumonde is back in its ugly form as hard to identify and if identified the antimalware cannot remove it. The Vundo trojan with its name-like Virtumondo can be hard to stop without the latest "fix" which may not be available for 24 hours or more. Spybot nor SuperAntiSpyware and many other scanners have been able to help as this trojan runs in memory upon startup it is tough. Spybot could Identify malware but not remove it with the accompanying messages stating, 'you do not have administrative rights...can we run on reboot'; clicking 'yes' and Spybot would not autorun on reboot.

Finally, with a more recent update of Malwarebytes and signatures from Nov. 30, 2010 I was able to break the back of the trojan and finally able to now access "safe mode". I just decided to try 'safe mode' and was able to access and now decided to run Spybot in 'safe mode' and Spybot was not able to identify more malware and was ablet to "Fix the Problem".

Hopefully more security vendors will get the fix so the recent Vundo trojan can be more easily disabled.

Many PC users do not understand that hard drives fail. The hard drive is the only physically working part on the machine minus the data/electrons that are moved through the motherboard and other peripherals. These drives spin at average around 5200 revolutions per minute.

Drives are basically holding data like a record player in ways that:

The record needle on a record player is now like a head reader/writer on a hard drive
The record on a record player is now the platter in a hard drive

Years and years of a physical platter spinning at several thousands revolutions per second is bound to wear out. Is there any disagreement here?

PC Virus Doctors have so many people asking why we need to move or save data on drives that are over two years old after they have become infected with viruses or trojans. This is science readers. Parts wear out. Platters that hold data may start to become worn. The head writer becomes worn and may be hitting the platter.
